Ashutosh enters quarterfinals

NEW DELHI: Ashutosh Singh beat third-seeded Pathanjali Ravishankar 6-4, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals of the ITF Satellite tennis circuit third leg at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Delhi boy recovered from 15-40 twice in the match to assert his supremacy. Ashutosh was trailing 2-4 in the first set before he pulled back.

Ashutosh will next meet Aditya Madkekar who eased past wild card Kiran Nandakumar.

Yannick Nelord was the other Delhi boy to make the last eight stage. The 21-year-old wild card recovered from being down 2-5 in the decider against former Davis Cupper Punna Vishal to win.

Yannick will meet the former Asian junior champion Tai-wei Liu of Chinese Taipei. Tai-wei Liu got past Yuri Bezeruk of Australia who retired early in the second set.

Divij Sharan, who defeated Dilshod Sharifi of Tajikistan, Vishnu Vardhan, who got past an injured Tushar Liberhan, and Vijay Kannan, who knocked out qualifier Mustafa Ghouse, were the other Indians to make the quarterfinals.

Divij will take on the top seed Aqeel Khan of Pakistan, while Vishnu will face former National champion Vijay Kannan.

The results: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Aqeel Khan bt Cheong-Eui Kim (Kor) 6-3, 6-1; Divij Sharan bt Dilshod Sharifi (Tjk) 6-0, 6-4; Ashutosh Singh bt Pathanjali Ravishankar 6-4, 6-4; Aditya Madkekar bt Kiran Nandakumar 6-1, 6-2; Vishnu Vardhan bt Tushar Liberhan 6-4, 3-0 (retired); Vijay Kannan bt Mustafa Ghouse 6-1, 6-2; Yannick Nelord bt Punna Vishal 2-6, 6-3, 7-5; Tai-Wei Liu (Tpe) bt Yuri Bezeruk (Aus) 6-2, 2-0 (retired).
