Kaushik unhappy

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Chief Coach of the Indian women's hockey team, M.K. Kaushik has criticised the omission of leading women's hockey players from the Arjuna Awardees list this year and questioned the manner in which other sportspersons were chosen based on their performance at the national level.

In a statement from Bhopal, where the team is training, Kaushik pointed out that despite the federation forwarding the names of Sumrai Tete and Jothi Sunita Kullu, the panel ignored women's hockey. Both these players have been part of medal-winning teams at the Asian and Commonwealth levels.

Ignoring claims

Olympian Kaushik, who was also coach of the gold-winning men's team at the 1998 Asian Games, pointed out that swimmers and wrestlers, among others, with only National-level achievements were being chosen for the award while ignoring the claims of women's hockey.

He said that even in choosing Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees, women's hockey had been given a raw deal.
