Distribution of copies of eye donation documents under way

KANNUR: State-level inauguration of the National Eye Donation Fortnight programme will be held at Taliparamba here on August 25.

District Medical Officer K. Seena said at a press conference here on Wednesday that distribution of copies of eye donation and body donation documents were already under way.

Volunteers of the District Blindness Eradication Committee, the Association of Voluntary Workers and Agencies of Kerala and the `Pain and Palliative' in Kannur were among the agencies entrusted with the work of assisting and guiding people willing to donate eyes and other organs, she said.

The DMO said one-fifth of the visually challenged in the world were living in India. Eyesight could be restored to 10 lakh people in the country through eye donation initiatives, she said.

At the State-level inaugural function P. Karunakaran, M.P., would receive the eye donation will and hand it over to Health Services Director T.K. Kuttamani. Families of people who had donated their eyes would be honoured at the function.

A campaign rally attended by cadets of the National Cadet Corps and the Scouts and Guides, National Service Scheme volunteers and Kudumbasree members would be held at Taliparamba on August 24, the DMO said.
