hnology: the way to meet the global challenges' by the Co-ordinator, Centre for Biotechnology, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, K. R. S. Sambasiva Rao, marked the inauguration of the Wilmut Club of Bio-technology of J. J. College of Arts and Science at Namanasamudram in Pudukottai district recently. Prof. Rao explained a novel tool of biotechnology to develop high yielding and disease-resistant crops. He said the gap between the demand for food and production was increasing in geometric proportion and it was high time the modern tools of biology was put to proper use. He also highlighted the development and use of human genome information in genetic screening. The Principal, J. Parasuraman, presided over the function. The management trustee, Kavitha Subramanian and the Head of Department of Biotechnology, K. M. Subbu Rathinam spoke on the activities of the Department and the Club. The MNSK College of Engineering, Dhakshinapuram in Pudukottai district celebrated the Independence Day in a different way. Oratorical and essay-writing competitions - `Role of engineering students in India 2020'; `National integration" and `India's Information Technology growth in world level' were held and a large number of students participated in it with enthusiasm. The Correspondent, M. Muthaliappan, honoured the winners with prizes and certificates. The students of Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukottai, were issued learning licenses at a function conducted here on August 22, in association with the Rotract Club of the college. Presiding over the function, the Director of the college, Jayson K. Jayabarathan emphasised on safe driving. Addressing the students, the Regional Transport Officer Subramaniam said the rate of accident was mounting every moment and the onus was on the students to reduce the accident fatality rate. The Brake Inspector Mr. Rajkumar and the Rotract club co-ordinator, Mr. Murali participated. The NSS volunteers of the Sri Bharathi Arts and Science College for Women, Kaikurichi, in Pudukottai district have adopted the Vijayaragunathapuram village in Thiruvarangulam panchayat. The correspondent of the college, G. Dhanasekaran handed over the formal letter in this regard to the president of the Thiruvarangulam panchayat, Muthulakshmi, at a function held in the village recently. The NSS volunteers have planned to desilt the local tank, organise mass tree planting campaign, renovate and properly maintain the Sri Siva Temple. They will conduct special programmes to create awareness among the rural people of health and hygiene, AIDS, women's literacy, Right to Information Act. The Principal of the college, P. Annamalai, secretary of the college, V. Vaidyanathan, the headmaster of the primary school, Arumugam felicitated the NSS volunteers. The NSS programme coordinator of the college, C. Durga, explained various activities undertaken by the NSS volunteers. The Department of Computer Science Engineering of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Engineering College, Perambalur, recently conducted a technical workshop on Network Trouble Shooting and Windows Administration. The technologists from Sri ACL Infosys briefed on the various ways of troubleshooting in Windows and explained the nuances of computer maintenance. The Chairman of the college, A. Srinivasan, the principal, B. M. Krishnamoorthy and Programme coordinator, S. Azhaguvel participated.
