NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, on a petition by a second year reserved category student of the Institute challenging his termination on the ground of below-standard performance. Issuing the notice, Justice Anil Kumar directed the IIT to file a reply to the petition by September 11. The petitioner, Kshiteez Kuldeep, said that the Deputy Registrar of the Institute had struck his name off the rolls on July 18 saying that his cumulative performance was below the required level for continuation. "His name is struck off the rolls of the Institute and this decision has the approval of the Chairman and the Senate,'' the termination order said. The petitioner had secured 66th rank in the IIT-JEE Entrance Test held in 2004 and had later joined IIT, Delhi, in computer science, the petition said. However, he failed to secure 46 "credits'' compulsory for students belonging to the reserved category at the end of the 4th Semester leading to his termination form the Institute, the petition stated.
In defence of his below-standard performance, the petitioner said he was depressed due to the death of his uncle and later grandfather; therefore, he
He submitted that he was ready to undergo a lesser punishment like change of stream or demotion for not obtaining the mandatory credits.
