Lankan Minister meets Achuthanandan

Thiruvananthapuram: Sri Lankan Deputy Minister for Tourism Arjuna Rantunga on Tuesday held discussions with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on the possibilities of starting ship service between the state capital and Colombo. Mr. Ranatunga, who called on the Chief Minister, said the ship service would help the tourism sector of Kerala and Sri Lanka in a big way. An official release said the Chief Minister had promised the Sri Lankan Minister that he would take up the matter with Union Government. — Staff Reporter

New chairman for Housing Board

Thiruvananthapuram: M. Rahamatullah has taken charge as the chairman of the Kerala State Housing Board. He is a member of the State executive and national council of the CPI. He was earlier the Malappuram district secretary of the party. Mr. Rahamatullah, who entered politics though the students' movement, was state president of the AISF. He has also served as office bearer of the Calicut University Union, director of the Horticorp and vice president of the Moyinkutty Vaidyar Memorial.

Karnataka to have Ombudsman

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Karnataka Government will introduce the Ombudsman system for local self-government institutions, Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Udesi has said. Mr. Udesi and a group of legislature party leaders of Karnataka Assembly who arrived here to study the decentralised planning system, revealed this when they met Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty on Wednesday morning. - Special Correspondent

New Speed Post scheme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Posts has launched `One India One Rate' Speed Post as part of the 20th anniversary of Speed Post. The Speed Post tariff under this scheme will be Rs.25 for the first weight slab of up to 50 gm, irrespective of the distance. This is inclusive of service tax and educational cess. The new scheme will be available at all 25 Speed Post centres and counters in Kerala and Lakshadweep from Tuesday. — Staff Reporter
