High Court to

organise meet

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has decided to organise a conference of presidents and

secretaries of Bar associations on September 9, 2006. A release from the Registrar (Administration, High Court), B.A. Patil, said the Seminars and Workshop Committee of the High Court had decided to organise the conference as part of the golden jubilee celebrations.

Judges, Union and State Ministers, jurists and advocates are expected to participate in the conference. Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph is expected to preside over the conference. — Staff Reporter

Byre Gowda may head Youth Congress

BANGALORE: Congress MLA for Vemagal in Kolar district Krishna Byre Gowda is likely to be appointed the next president of the State Youth Congress.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, MLA for Gandhinagar in Bangalore, had tendered his resignation from the post about six months ago. But the AICC had told him to remain in the post till the appointment of a successor. Sources in the Congress said KPCC president M. Mallikarjun Kharge recommended to the party high command the candidature of Mr. Krishna Byre Gowda for the post and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly N. Dharam Singh too backed his candidature. — Special Correspondent

Helmet for rider only

GULBARGA: The State Government has decided to relax the rules on helmet by making it mandatory for the rider only.

Disclosing this to the presspersons here, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said that a final decision on this would be taken in the Cabinet meeting in Bangalore on Thursday.

The earlier decision of the Government to make helmet compulsory for both the rider and the person riding pillion had generated much heat and there was opposition from the general public to the plan to make helmet compulsory for those riding pillion.

Seminar

BANGALORE: Union Minister for Law and Justice, H.R. Bharadwaj, is expected to inaugurate a three-day seminar on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) development initiative, which is scheduled to begin in Bangalore on August 27. N. Kumar, judge of the Karnataka High Court, who is also the executive chairman of the International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ICADR-regional centre, Bangalore), told presspersons here on Wednesday that a delegation from the U.S. would participate in the seminar.
