KARIMNAGAR: The ambitious Andhra Pradesh Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (APREGS), which was launched to stop migration of labour and provide employment to farm labourers, has come as a boon to the rural folk of Karimnagar district. The scheme is being successfully implemented since April 1. Karimnagar district tops in the implementation of the APREGS in Telangana region after Adilabad by taking up a total of 853 works. The authorities have also disbursed Rs 7.27 crores as wages to 78,209 labourers till date after completion of 853 works in the district. Currently 23,098 labourers are working and collecting their wages through post offices and banks. The implementation of employment guarantee scheme has forced the farm employers to increase the wages of the labourers in the agriculture sector during the period. Under the EGS programme, a labourer would get Rs. 87 per day, where as when he works in the fields he would be getting anywhere between Rs. 35 to Rs. 50 per day. The District Water Management Agency (DWMA) project director, A. Srinivas, said that they have set a target of making payments over Rs. 60 crores during this financial year.
