IT officials conduct raids

Searches cover former AIADMK Minister's premises

CHENNAI:
Officials of the Income Tax (Investigation Wing) have carried out search operations in 12 premises and survey operations in 24 premises at Chennai, Dindigul and Madurai, relating to R. Viswanathan, a former AIADMK Minister.
The searches covered Mr.Viswanathan's brother R. Jeyaraj and some associates engaged in transport business and also a few others engaged in transport business, running of cinema theatre, automobile trade, hotel and petrol bunks. About 200 officers and staff were engaged in the operations.
The searches have so far revealed duplicate books of accounts in the transport business, suppression of collection from the theatre, undisclosed jewellery, supression of marriage expenses, undisclosed investments in immovable properties and movable properties, besides undisclosed investments in money-lending business, according to a press release from the Director of Income Tax (Investigation), Chennai.
While the total undisclosed income is still being evaluated by the IT Department, some bank lockers have been placed under restraint. The searches are still in progress. Meanwhile, enquiries with the IT Department revealed that special permission was granted to Mr.Viswanathan to attend the Assembly session.
