Minister introduces Bill in House
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Cooperation Minister Ko.Si. Mani on Wednesday introduced in the Assembly a Bill taking away powers of the Special Officers and Administrators to admit members to cooperative societies.
The AIADMK opposed the Bill at the introduction stage itself.
The statement of objects and reasons of the amendment Bill to the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Societies Act, 1983 (Tamil Nadu Act 30 of 1983) said, "in a batch of writ petitions challenging the validity of the said section 89-A of the said Act, the Full Bench of the High Court of Madras has held that the elected board of a cooperative society alone is empowered to enrol new members and declared that the said section 89-A of the said Act is arbitrary, unreasonable, ultra-vires and unconstitutional as it would be detrimental to the democratic process and disturbance to the democratic set up affecting the democratic rights of the general body of the society."
