Melbourne: A doctor of Indian origin has become the first person in New South Wales of Australia in more than 25 years to be convicted for conducting an abortion illegally. Suman Sood (52), who did her medical training in India, faces a maximum 10-year in jail after being found guilty by the NSW Supreme Court for illegally administering a drug for carrying out an abortion. However, she was acquitted of the charges of manslaughter. The prosecution said Ms. Sood gave the drug in May 2002 to a 20-year-old-woman in preparation for an abortion procedure. The next morning the woman was delivered of a ``four-month-old premature boy,'' who was pronounced dead later. Ms. Sood denied giving the woman the drug or agreeing to terminate her pregnancy. PTI
