CHENNAI: Sixty teams (bands) participated in the `anthem of Chennai' contest held on Tuesday. However, only a handful presented Tamil songs and not many with Carnatic music-based ragas. The challenge was to capture the spirit of Chennai in a one-minute song.

    Participation criteria

A maximum of seven members were allowed per team and there was no age limit. A five-member jury, including violinist Ganesh and vocalist Sangeetha Krishna, decided on 10 semi-finalists who will present their anthem on Friday at the Chennai Convention Centre.

An anthem will be chosen by an eight-member jury that will include eminent playback singers and Carnatic vocalists besides musicians from the film world.

The chosen one will receive Rs.10,000 as prize and offers to perform for professional organisations.

    Songs on website

Songs of the semi finalists may be heard on vibamisschennai.com from Wednesday. Listeners can also choose their band. Participants may expect prizes for best lyrics, presentation, singer and so on.

On Friday, a one-to-one interaction will be held with the winner of the on-going `Icon of Chennai' contest.

You may cast your vote through cell phone by typing the name of your choice and sending it to 6060.
