CHENNAI
: The Transport Department conducted a two-day special drive to check commercial and passenger vehicles in Chennai.
Department officials said 4,730 vehicles were checked during the drive conducted on Sunday and Monday. The officials collected a compounding fee of Rs 4.12 lakh from violators. Apart from the compounding fee, the authorities also collected taxes of Rs 4.82 lakh, they said.
The checks were conducted at Uthandi on East Coast Road, GST Road, Grand Northern Trunk Road near Pettikuppam check-post and on Poonamallee High Road.
In the drive 105 passenger vehicles and 242 goods transport carriers found to be carrying excess load. Ten vehicles were charged with operating without permit and an equal number of vehicles were found to be plying without paying tax, 15 did not have fitness certificates, the officials said. Authorities detained eight vehicles during the raid.
A senior Transport Department official said a drive was conducted on East Coast Road against the movement of illegally operated maxi cabs. They imposed fines on eight vehicles and detained two of them. The drive was conducted on the instructions of the Transport Minister, K.N. Nehru and carried out under the supervision of the Transport Commissioner, R. Sivakumar.
