PUCL for ceasefire between naxals, police

Special Correspondent

Focus on restoration of peace in villages

HYDERABAD: In a bid to ensure restoration of peace in villages, as it was prior to talks with naxalites two years ago, the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has demanded a ceasefire by extremist groups and the police to pave way for a similar situation.

The demand for ceasefire was also made at a meeting convened by PUCL with various parties here last week, its president, Keshava Rao Jadhav told a news conference on Wednesday.

He said the meeting was of the unanimous view that Government should take the initiative for ceasefire as it had broken the same on the last occasion. The meeting did not agree with the Government that the naxalites surrender weapons as a pre-condition to talks. The Government stuck to the condition with the ulterior motive of disarming naxalites.

Mr. Jadhav said the naxalite groups enjoyed public sympathy because mainstream political parties failed to meet peoples' aspirations.

They were convinced that only naxalites could deliver the goods. The fake encounters by police only enhanced public sympathy for naxalites.
