Anti-Terrorist Squads set up in State: DGP

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: Director General of Police (DGP) Raman Srivastava has said that Anti-Terrorist Squads have been formed to tackle terrorism in the State.

The squads were being given special training. Details about the project could not be disclosed, he told mediapersons here on Thursday.

Mr. Srivastava said the State did not face any immediate terrorist threats, but the squads were set up as a preventive measure.

On intelligence inputs from Central agencies that terrorist groups were getting active in the State, Mr. Srivastava said: "It is an intelligence operation. Intelligence reports cannot be disclosed."

Asked if there was a link between the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and Jamaat-e-Islami, he said it could not be disclosed.

Mr. Srivastava refuted allegations that the police department was targeting any particular community or any particular group. (The police had carried out a search at the office of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Hira Centre, Kozhikode, following the arrest of 18 SIMI activists in Kochi recently). The DGP said that there was no delay in the investigations into bomb explosion cases in the State. However, the police department did not have enough scientific experts and steps were being taken to address the issue.

He said police adalats would be held at all police stations under the supervision of the sub-inspectors.

The public could meet the officer on a specified date. The DGP would take part in these programmes.

Mr. Srivastava was in the city to take part in a conference with police officers above the rank of sub-inspectors attached to Kozhikode City, Kozhikode Rural and Wayanad district.

Mr. Srivastava said he told the officers not to indulge in police excesses and highhandedness. However, they should take action against criminals. Action would be taken against police personnel for being lethargic.

A new Goonda Act would soon be framed, Mr. Srivastava said.
