dated August 25, 1956: UGC Chairmanship

The former Finance Minister, Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, has accepted the Education Minister's offer of the Chairmanship of the University Grants Commission. For the present he will receive a nominal salary of Re. 1. He has resigned his membership of Parliament, to be effective from August 27, on which date he will take up his new office. While there is satisfaction that Mr. Deshmukh's services are being utilised by the Government, there is comment that it would have been of greater advantage if he were associated with the same subject as he had handled with distinction all these years.
