Internal reservation for OBCs gets support

Special Correspondent

`It should be done in a scientific way to cover small communities'

Statements
  • There is truth in the claim that a few dominant classes are garnering reservation
  • Chief Minister's statement on internal reservation for castes under Scheduled Castes is irresponsible

GULBARGA: The move by the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government in the State to introduce internal reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) has received support from Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (Sagar).

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Convenor of the State DSS D.G. Sagar, Organising Convenor Malleshi Sajjan and District Convenor Arjun Bhadre, said the DSS supported the stand taken by the Janata Dal (S) for introducing internal reservation for Other Backward Classes to enable all communities to get their share in reservation in education and employment opportunities.

However, Mr. Sagar said the Government before introducing internal reservation for Other Backward Classes should take into consideration the pros and cons of the move. It should be done in a scientific way so that small communities among Other Backward Classes, who were deprived of their share of reservation, got justice.

He said there was some truth in the claim that reservation extended by the Government for Other Backward Classes was being garnered by a few dominant backward classes while the majority of the small communities had been deprived of their share. This should be undone to enable all backward classes to benefit.

Mr. Sagar, however, opposed the statement of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy that the Government was thinking of introducing internal reservation for different castes and sub-castes included under Scheduled Castes and pointed out that the Supreme Court in its judgment had rejected such a move by the Andhra Pradesh Government as unconstitutional.

He said the Chief Minister without taking into consideration the Supreme Court judgment in this regard had made an irresponsible statement to create confusion in the minds of different castes and sub-castes in the Scheduled Castes list.

Mr. Sagar said the case of Other Backward Classes and the Scheduled Castes could not be clubbed together with the move to introduce internal reservation and pointed out that the Union Government had a major role in the case of inclusion and deletion of castes and sub-castes in the Scheduled Castes list, while the State Government played a significant role in the identification of backward classes.

The samiti was organising the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister late Devaraj Urs by conducting seminars from August 20 to September 20. In Gulbarga, it would be organised on August 28. Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur would inaugurate it.
