IN SUPPORT OF DEMANDS: Students from different schools in Gulbarga staging a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday.
GULBARGA: Students of almost all colleges and schools owing allegiance to the Students Federation of India (SFI) on Thursday boycotted classes and staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding among other things the introduction of 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes in admission to higher education and increasing the allocation for education. The students, who walked out of their classes, took out a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner listing out their demands, which also included their opposition to the introduction of astrology course in universities. They demanded a law on admission to professional courses to end the exploitation of students by private managements. SFI president Sharanappa Saidapur, who led the protest, also said that the Government should not allow foreign universities and colleges to enter the Indian education field. It should take steps to strengthen Indian universities with increased allocations for introduction of new courses to suit the market requirements, he said. The memorandum also demanded that the Government scrap the Karnataka Universities Act 2000 and give up the entrance test for admission to postgraduate courses. The students demanded that the Government increase the allocation for education by at least 10 per cent in the Central budget and 30 per cent in the State budget. Referring to the increasing incidents of attacks and atrocities on girls in the colleges and universities, the memorandum said the Government should take steps to constitute anti-sexual harassment committees in all colleges and universities immediately, as per the directions of the Supreme Court. The memorandum wanted the Government to take steps to curb the donation menace and provide all basic facilities in all schools and colleges. The Government should fill all vacancies in schools, colleges and universities immediately, it said.
