Acharya Nagarjuna University moves to encourage successful sportspersons

To grant marks in academics to medallists in various competitions


  • Sports hostel being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crores on ANU premises nearing completion
  • University ties up with CBR Foundation to impart scientific coaching to 20 best athletes

    VIJAYAWADA: Acharya Nagarjuna University physical director Y. Kishore on Thursday said that the university was keen on recognising the contribution of successful sportspersons by granting 10 per cent marks in academics to medallists in the all-India inter-university meets and 5 per cent marks to medallists in the South Zone and South West Zone competitions.

    Participating in the inaugural function of the ANU inter-collegiate kabaddi tournament for women at Montessori Mahila Kalasala on Thursday, Mr. Kishore said that the prestigious sports hostel, being constructed on the ANU premises with an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crores, was nearing completion and said the 300-odd colleges, which came under the purview of ANU, could make use of the infrastructure for the promotion of sports and games

    He also requested District Sports Development officer B. Sudhakar to make use of the facilities by conducting more sports meets.

    Commonwealth Games

    Mr. Kishore said that the university had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CBR Foundation, an outfit promoting athletics, by launching CBR Centre for Excellence.

    The aime was to give scientific coaching to 20 best athletes keeping in view the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

    "The foundation is taking care of the needs of the athletes. Sports Authority of India (SAI) has also deputed athletic coach Vinayak Prasad to fine-tune the athletes," he added.

    Montessori Mahila Kalasala correspondent Koteswaramma lauded the contribution of college physical director Sudha Rani in promoting the culture of sports and games among students in a big way.

    College Committee president Krishna Rao, Mr. Sudhakar and Krishna District Kabaddi Association secretary Nancharayya took part in the function.
