HASSAN: Police have arrested seven persons in connection with burglary and illegal transportation of forest products in two cases. They have recovered gold silver, electronic gadgets, rosewood and black wood in all estimated at Rs. 5.50 lakh, according to Superintendent of Police Panduranga H. Rane. Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Rane said the Arkalgud police arrested two persons in connection with burglary of a shop in the town and recovered gold, silver and electronic gadgets valued at Rs. 3 lakh on Thursday. He said the burglars broke open the rolling shutter of a shop on Market Road in the town on May 20 and decamped with gold, silver, mobile phones, digital weighing machine and a compact disc player. Manik Chand Jain, owner of the shop, lodged a complaint with the Arkalgud Town Police, he said. A team, headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police K.P. Bheemayya, solved the case by arresting Jagadeesh (26) of Huliyar village in Piriyapatna and Suresh (24) of Guddenahallikopplu village in Hassan, he added. He said that the accused admitted during interrogation that they had burgled eight houses. The police recovered gold ornaments weighing 175 grams, silver ornaments weighing six kilograms, two colour television sets and four mobile phones. The accused were presented before a court which remanded them to judicial custody till August 28, he said.
Rosewood seized
In the second incident, Alur police arrested five persons in connection with illegal transportation of forest products and recovered six logs of rosewood valued at Rs. 1 lakh. They have seized the vehicle used for the crime. They stopped a vehicle transporting rosewood logs illegally from Karadibetta Coffee Estate and arrested Udaya Shetty, Puttaraju, Lokesh, Ravi and Puttaswamy of Sakleshpur, Mr. Rane said. The Belur police have recovered 44 logs of black wood valued at Rs. 1.5 lakh in Nelkehosahalli village of Belur taluk. However, the main accused in the case, Thammanna Gowda, managed to escape. Appreciating the efforts made by the officials, Mr. Rane said they would be rewarded. On the case related to the attempted abduction of a silk merchant in Hassan on Tuesday, he said a team had gone to Bangalore.
