Telangana issue

With the Telangana Rashtra Samiti withdrawing from the UPA after charging the Congress with betrayal and its chief Chandrasekhara Rao going on a hunger strike demanding a separate state of Telangana, the issue has assumed a political flavour.

The BJP has jumped into the fray, supporting the TRS against the Congress although it had a different opinion when it was at the helm of affairs in New Delhi. The Congress, under pressure from the Left, is unwilling to act and hence insisting on the formation of a second State Reorganisation Commission.

Patiala, Punjab

Mr. Rao and A. Narendra have allayed the fear among the people of the Telangana region that they would betray them like M. Channa Reddy who merged the Telangana Praja Samithi with the Congress three decades ago. By launching a hunger strike on the issue, Mr. Rao has inspired the TRS cadres and volunteers to work for a Telangana state.

Karimnagar, A.P.

Creation of new states is highly detrimental to the existence of India as a nation. It is unfortunate that politicians are intensifying divisive tendencies to gain mileage.

Instead, they should strengthen the Panchayati Raj institutions so that development can be more inclusive.

Mathew Koshy,
Tiruvalla, Kerala

The creation of Telangana will set a bad example. It will lead to more demands and fragmentation of States such as Maharashtra (Vidharbha), Assam (Bodo Land) and Karnataka (Coorg).

A.S. Raj,
Bangalore

Soon after coming to power in 2004, the Congress should have constituted a second States Reorganisation Commission, as promised, to look into the demand for smaller states. Now that the battle lines have been drawn, it is for the TRS leadership to display sincerity in achieving its goal of a separate state of Telangana.

Seshagiri Row Karry,
Hyderabad

The resignation of Mr. Rao and Mr. Narendra from the Union Council of Ministers is ill-timed. The people gave them a mandate for five years in which they could have mustered enough support for the cause of Telangana.

Sitting on a fast-unto-death at the Jantar Mantar is populism and undesirable. It is political will that is needed for the development of the region, not theatrics.

K.M.G. Vivekanandam,
Madurai, T.N.

It is surprising that a seasoned politician like Mr. Rao should accuse the Congress of betrayal. Did he not know about the ways of the Congress before aligning his party with it?

The Telangana slogan was raked up only for defeating the Telugu Desam Party and will be buried till the Congress ends up in the opposition benches once again.

P. Raja Rao,
Hyderabad
