A shame!

This refers to the report that a woman died after allegedly jumping into her husband's funeral pyre in Tulsipur village, Madhya Pradesh. It is a shame and most unfortunate that a social crime is pushed and tucked away in a small corner as news in the media. Till such time as we do not accord dignity to women and ensure their economic independence, we will not be able to change the mindset of society. A massive campaign needs to be carried on for the 42 million widows who need social, emotional, and political security. It is not an isolated incident of sati. Widowhood is a state of near death.

V. Mohini Giri,
New Delhi

While, on the one hand, the Government is taking steps to empower women, on the other, we continue to have a society where a woman decides to jump into her husband's funeral pyre. What an irony!

Sunil Khora,
New Delhi
