Corrections and Clarifications

The heading of the PTI report was "Railway officer goes into hiding to evade arrest" (August 19, 2006, page 1). The text stated that Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Railways) Ajay Verma had gone underground to evade arrest after a court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him in connection with a property dispute case. A reader points out that the heading was incorrect. Mr. Verma is an IPS officer belonging to the Bihar cadre. The State Government has posted him as DIG Railways.

Referring to a special feature on Independence day (Visakhapatnam city, August 15, 2006, page 5) "Triumph of moral right", Standard X students of Ashram Public School, Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, say: "We have read an article on Independence day in your paper. It is a very good article showing all the information of the speech of Jawaharlal Nehru. But we felt very bad seeing a very big mistake in the article where it is mentioned the date of August 14, 2005. Your newspaper is the largest circulating paper in the country. It is a shame on your part to do such a mistake. It is much more bad to commit such a blunder relating to the matter of Independence day which we are proud of very much." The Visakhapatnam Bureau clarifies that it was a typographical error.

In the Agencies (PTI, UNI, ANI) report "He [Bismillah Khan] performed from Red Fort on first Republic Day" (August 22, 2006), the last paragraph was: "`Sannayi Appanna' was based on the life of a poor shehnai player, very much reflecting the life of the maestro himself. Bismillah Khan rendered shehnai pieces for the movie." A reader points out that it is "Sanaadi Appanna" and not "Sannayi Appanna". "Sanaadi" in Kannada means "shehnai", and the film is based on a person Appanna.

In "Bopanna moves up" ("Briefly — Sport", August 23, 2006), it was stated that eighth seed Karan Rastogi and his Ukrainian partner Sergei Bubka went down to Pavel Ivanov and Sergei Krotiouk in the Challenger tennis tournament at Bukhara, Ukraine. A reader says that it should have been Sergei Bubka Junior, who is the son of legendary pole vaulter Sergei Bubka. The Sports Desk clarifies that it is not an error. He is Sergei Bubka.

"Indian shuttlers supreme" ("Sport", August 23, 2006) said that Krishna D. Raja [in the women's section in badminton at the South Asian Games] conceded a game in a heap of errors. A reader says that the results table showed that she won in two straight games and that one of them is wrong. The right scores are in the text. The middle game score (15-21) was left out in the results column.

In "Divase makes a splash" ("Sport", August 23, 2006) a reader felt there were two mistakes in the results table [South Asian Games]. The first was the time recorded for Mandar Divase which said "Swimming: men: 1,500m freestyle: 1. Mandar Divase (Ind) 916:17.58 s, NR, prev 16:30.83, Mandar, 2004). It was a typographical error and should have been "16:17.58 s". The second was in the team score for India in "Shooting: men: 10 m air rifle" which said "1765 (Raghunath 591, Navanath 91, Fulchand Bangar 583)." It was a typographical error and should have been "... Navanath 591".

A reader says that the AP report "Impressive wins for Chelsea and Manchester United" ("Sport", August 21, 2006) had an error. The last sentence of the article was: "On Saturday, Sheffield United and Tottenham tumbled 2-0 at Bolton." Tottenham indeed were defeated 2-0 by Bolton, but the article should have made clear that Sheffield tied 1-1 with Liverpool on Saturday, the reader says. The Sports Desk clarifies that it was an editing error and that the word "Liverpool" was left out.
