Abu Sayyaf rebels killed

MANILA: Six Abu Sayyaf rebels were killed and four Marines were wounded during a clash in southern Philippine islands of Sulu on Thursday, the military said. The soldiers clashed with 80 rebels when they attacked an Abu Sayyaf camp in Barangay (village) Kabuntakas-Kaunayan in Patikul town, said Brig. Gen. Juancho Sabban,. The raid was part of ``Oplan Ultimatum,'' military operations to hunt down the Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani and two Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) operatives believed to be the masterminds of the 2002 Bali bombings which killed about 200 persons, said Gen. Sabban. The Abu Sayyaf is a rebel group based in and around the southern islands of the Philippines. The group has carried out bombings, assassinations, kidnappings and extortion in their fight for an independent Islamic state in western Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. — Xinhua
