SINGAPORE: An impeachment `complaint' against President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was defeated in Manila on Thursday. This was the second such move by the Opposition after the mandatory gap of a year since the previous impeachment plea which also had failed at the initial stage itself. With this, Ms. Arroyo, for long under a political siege over the allegations of an electoral fraud by her in 2004, won a decisive round in the battle of wits with the Opposition. Charges of nepotism and complaints of corruption involving her family members were also hurled at her. The latest Congressional vote was good news for her at a time when the warnings of military coup plots and the protest rallies became somewhat less frequent in recent months. With the Philippines scheduled to host later this year a summit of East Asian leaders including those from India as also China and Japan, presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said "it is time [now] to leave the image of a divided Philippines."
