PONDICHERRY: Cutting across partylines, members of the Assembly demanded introduction of the Goondas Act in the Union Territory to control the growing crime rate. However, the Chief Minister did not give any reply to the demand. It was put forward when Communist Party of India MLA Viswanathan raised a question to know the number of murders that took place in Pondicherry in the last five years. The Chief Minister replied that 144 incidents had been reported till May 2006. Giving statistics about the incidence of murder, Mr. Viswanathan said the crime rate had been increasing and alleged that the Police department was "malfunctioning" and had become "inefficient". Supporting the argument, DMK MLA R. Siva, PMC representative K. Lakshminarayanan, and ruling party member Kandasamy said the only solution was the Goondas Act. Mr. Siva said that in majority of the organised crimes, a particular gang and its supporters were involved. The PMC MLA said it was high time that the Government put down organised crimes, as gangs lured teenaged youth. He said many of those apprehended for murder and other crimes fall below the age of 25. He added that the only option before the Government was to book the rowdy elements under the Goondas Act. The DMK leader in the house, A.M.H Nazeem, also supported it.
