Rohan Bopanna enters semifinals

NEW DELHI: Qualifier Rohan Bopanna continued his fine run and reached the semifinals of the $25,000 Challenger tennis tournament at Bukhara, Uzbekistan, with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over seventh seed Gouichi Motomura of Japan.

It was the first victory for the 26-year-old Bopanna over the Japanese Davis Cupper who had beaten him twice, including the final of the Asian Championship four years ago. Bopanna, who had earlier beaten Orest Tereshchuk of Ukraine 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the pre-quarterfinals, will take on fifth-seeded Mikhail Ledovskikh of Russia in the semifinals. In doubles, Bopanna in partnership with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan tamed the top-seeded pair of Frank Moser of Germany and Orest Tereshchuk 6-3, 7-6(4) in the semifinals.

Earlier, the India-Pakistan pair had beaten Pavel Ivanov and Sergei Krotiouk of Russia 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
