DEMANDING HIGHER PAY: Doctors in Government service staging a dharna in front of Kozhikode Collectorate on Thursday. Photo: S. Ramesh Kurup
KOZHIKODE: Government doctors staged a dharna under the banner of Kerala Government Medical Officers Association in front of the civil station in the city on Thursday after going on mass casual leave. The demonstration was to express protest against the Government's refusal to concede their long-standing demand for better service conditions. The demonstration in front of the civil station signalled the association's intentions to intensify its agitation that had till now been in the form of non-cooperation with some of the activities they were required to perform. Though on protest and on leave, the doctors attended to their duties at the General Hospital in the city. Casuality and out-patients wards functioned, hospital superintendent Dr Thanakam said. In a statement Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Kerala branch appealed to the Government to end the strike and avoid more aggressive forms of agitations that would cause considerable hardships to the people. IMA State secretary R Ramesh urged the Government to offer better service conditions to attract more doctors to its health services. IMA has also come out in support of the government doctors' strike on August 30.
