IT raids yield undisclosed jewellery

CHENNAI: The search conducted by officials of the Income Tax (Investigation Wing) in the known residences and official premises of former AIADMK Minister R. Viswanthan in Madurai has yielded undisclosed jewellery worth Rs. 45 lakh. According to official sources here, the raids which began on Wednesday morning with 200 officers and staff ended only around 6 a.m. on Thursday. — Special Correspondent

12 Myanmarese held

CHENNAI: In the second successful anti-poaching operation in the past week, the Port Blair Coast Guard apprehended 12 Myanmarese and handed them over to the Andaman and Nicobar Police on August 23. The Coast Guard was warned of the presence of poachers on Wednesday, a press note said. They were using a dinghy for their operations, off the northern group of islands. The Coast Guard deployed an armed Chetak helicopter and the search was carried out despite bad weather. Commandant P. Gaur and Deputy Commandant Ramesh located the dinghy and fired warning shots. Though the occupants of the dinghy tried to flee, they relented after the warning shots and stopped at Tuft Island, about 60 miles north of Port Blair. They were apprehended by the helicopter crew and were later flown in batches to Port Blair. — Special Correspondent

Onam special trains

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will operate Onam special trains from here to Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore.

Train no. 0635 will leave Chennai Central at 10 p.m. on August 31, September 2 to 5 and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 4.30 p.m. the next day. Train no. 0636 will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 8 p.m. on September 1, 3 to 6 and arrive here at 12.15 p.m. the next day.

The composition of the trains will be one AC two-tier, one AC three-tier, 12 sleeper class, two general second class and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Train no. 0633 will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 8 p.m. on September 9 and arrive here at 12.15 p.m. the next day. Train no. 0634 will leave Chennai Central at 4 p.m. on September 10 and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 7 a.m. the next day. The composition of the trains will be one AC two-tier, one AC three-tier, 12 sleeper class, three general second class and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches.

Train no. 0661 will leave Chennai Central at 4 p.m. on September 1, 3, 5 and 9 and reach Mangalore at 7.45 a.m. the next day.

Train no. 0662 will leave Mangalore at 4 p.m. on September 2, 4, 6 and 10 and arrive here at 8 a.m. the next day. The composition of the trains will be one AC two-tier, one AC three-tier, 12 sleeper class, two general second class and two luggage cum brake van coaches. Reservation will commence on August 24.

Tatkal booking is available in all classes in the above specials, says a railway release. — Special Correspondent

Talks on wages for hosiery workers

TIRUPUR: Third round of direct talks between trade unions and knitwear producers' associations will be held here on Friday to reach a wage accord for over two lakh hosiery workers. Six trade unions recognised by the industry bodies have already submitted their charter of demands.

The Tirupur Exporters' Association at its recent general body decided that there would be no wage hike for a year.

However joint action committee of trade unions categorically rejected the TEA resolution. — Staff Reporter
