NEW DELHI: Former international Anadi Barua has been handed over the responsibility to coach the Delhi team for the Santosh Trophy to be held at Faridabad and Gurgaon from September 14. Making the announcement on Thursday, the newly-elected Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) president Subhash Chopra said Barua would be assisted by Tarun Roy and Krishan Avtar while veteran coach O.P. Malhotra will be in charge of the coaching camp in preparation of the National championship. To prepare the Delhi team, open trials would be held on August 28 at the Ambedkar Stadium. The DSA president also revealed that services of players of Delhi origin are being sought for the forthcoming championship. The DSA has sent messages to Sunil Chetri, Vinay Singh, Praveen Rawat, Avdesh Paul, Prashant Jaggi, Rajat Guha, Umar Rehmatullah and Adnan Rehmatullah to make themselves available for Delhi. Delhi has been clubbed with Orissa, Jammu and Kashmir and Railways in cluster VII in the Santosh Trophy. At a function organised to bring together the football officials of the city on Wednesday, Chopra indicated that steps were being taken to ensure smooth conduct of the game. "I want co-operation from all sections and I promise every effort would be made to bring back Delhi's lost glory in football," said Chopra, who also announced a fund of Rs. 1 lakh to benefit former players needing financial assistance. Chopra is expected to announce his team of office-bearers in a day or two after consultation with the group headed by former DSA president Umesh Sood. Having withdrawn in favour of Chopra, Sood was candid when he said, "I expect Mr. Chopra to keep his word. We had reached the compromise in the interest of football in Delhi and it would be tragic if he does not keep his word when picking his set of office-bearers."
Medal hopes on TV
India's medal hopefuls at the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games will be featured in a television serial to be produced by Morna Films under an initiative made by trap shooter Moraad Ali Khan. Titled `Mission Olympic Gold', the project was being launched with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as the strategic partner, Moraad said on Thursday. He made a presentation before the Parliamentary Forum on Youth on Thursday at which more than 40 Members of Parliament attended. The 52-episode serial will feature 48 Olympic probables from 13 disciplines. Moraad said that Doordarshan had already agreed to air the serial. The idea was to allow more exposure to the Olympic hopefuls so that they would be recognised by the public and gain more patronage from the corporate sector. Moraad has also helped set up a "Mission Olympic Gold Fund" which will disburse funds for deserving athletes in their quest for an Olympic medal.
