The bandh was in response to a call given by the Students' Federation of India

HASSAN: Government schools and colleges remained closed on Thursday in various parts of Hassan district in response to a State-wide bandh call given by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) in protest against the apathy of the coalition Government in addressing various problems being confronted by students in primary schools to universities.

While private educational institutions conducted classes as usual, government schools and colleges remained closed. Students under the leadership of the SFI district president Manjunath and secretary Lingaraju took out a procession from the Government College and handed over a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda.

Later, they burnt an effigy of the government on Mangalore-Bangalore Road. Schools and colleges remained closed in Arsikere and Channarayapatna towns and students submitted a memorandum to the tahsildars of the respective taluks. In the memorandum, SFI urged the Government to provide basic infrastructure, including teaching faculty, to various schools and colleges in the State. It said that midday meal programme should be extended to students up to 10th standard. It sought a permanent solution to the problem of the teaching staff of Mahiti Sindu. It also appealed to the Government to bring down the fee fixed for primary and higher education.
