PATIALA: A 24-year-old student of a government medical college here died after apparently falling from the rooftop of the college hostel and his relatives charged foul play. The body of Vivek Gupta, a final year student, was recovered by his roommates this morning. Though preliminary questioning of Vivek by police did not point to murder, Senior Superintendent of Police Pramod Ban said the matter will be probed from the point of view of murder as Vivek's uncle alleged some conspiracy behind his death. A case has been registered under section 302 of the IPC (murder) against unknown persons. Vivek, a resident of Mohali, was found dead on the first floor of the senior boy's hostel. His roommates discovered his body this morning at around 6.30 in the morning after which the matter was reported to the college authorities and subsequently to the police. Police quizzed several of Vivek's friends to ascertain whether he had any disputes with anybody, after which the SSP said so far no such facts had come to light which could determine that Vivek had been murdered. Vivek's friends maintain that he had gone to the rooftop to make phone calls last night from where he fell on concrete and sustained a head injury which proved fatal. - PTI
