All cases withdrawn from consumer forum chief

K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI: All cases have been withdrawn from the president of the District Consumer Disputes Redress Forum, Chennai (South), R. Aparna, following instructions from the National Consumer Disputes Redress Commission.

P. Perumalappan, president of the Tiruvallur forum, has been requested to hold additional charge of Chennai (South).

The arrangement follows a petition filed in the Madras High Court against Ms. Aparna, alleging she had indulged in corrupt practices. The petitioner said the police did not register any case despite several complaints.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption told the High Court there was prima facie material against her, and that a case might be registered.

At present, there are nearly 1,200 cases pending in the Chennai (South) forum. About 90 cases have to be disposed of by the Tiruvallur forum.

Already 21 fora , including the Tiruvallur forum, have become defunct due to vacancies in the posts of President and Member.
