CHENNAI: Chennai-based Alpha Arts and Science College will tie up with Lake Superior State University, Grace George, chairman of the institution, said.

Speaking to press persons at `Roboworld', an inter-collegiate meet on Robotics held at their college on Monday, she said international collaborations enhanced quality of education and facilitated exchange programmes, which would give students an exposure.

Managing director Suja George said they would look into disciplines such as Robotics and Nanotechnology. "Initially, we plan to offer them as allied papers or electives. We will later offer them as full-fledged courses," she added.

Jim Devaparasad, head, Department of Robotics (Manufacturing Engineering Technology), Lake Superior State University, U.S., made a presentation on Robotics. He highlighted the use of robots in industries such as automobile, packaging, food processing and medical surgery.

He said professionals could handle robots with ease if they equipped themselves with specific skills. "I personally find robots used in surgery very fascinating. I follow up quite a bit on these advancements," professor Devaprasad said. He also played video clippings of American doctors performing cardiac surgeries with the help of robots. Speaking on the career options in Robotics, he said design and implementation were two main branches offering several opportunities. His lecture was followed by an interactive session with students.
