Thirumavalavan's advice to students
Is there a limit to praising a chief guest, who happens to be a political leader, at a function? In Tamil Nadu politics, it was the practice to shower praise on the main speaker to the hilt, said the DPI leader, Thol. Thirumavalavan, while addressing students at a city college recently.
Even as the students laughter could subside, Mr. Thirumavalavan, who referred to the speeches praising him, continued with a smile: "At times, the tributes made went to the extent of putting the chief guest to shame. Whether one deserved the praise or not, it would be thrust on him or her." However, he said, the praise was because of the affection and regard the organisers have for the chief guest. Referring to a speaker describing him as "Paechu Puyal", Mr. Thirumavalavan said till now he had heard only of "Puratchi Puyal' (stormy orator).
"But do not expect any "puyal" (storm) from me," he said plunging the hall again into laughter. "Listen to my speech and take it in your usual stride so that you can understand the lecture in the proper perspective," was his advice.
