CHENNAI : Bhuvaneshwari was all smiles, taken by surprise when she was announced the senior-level city school winner of the `Tata Building India National Essay Competition' conducted by the Tata Group. She was one of the six city-level winners felicitated at a function on Thursday. "I couldn't believe myself when the announcement was made. I thought I did not even qualify as a school winner," said Bhuvaneswari of Lady Sivaswamy Iyer Girls School. Her essay focussed on intelligence of younger generation to make India a superpower by 2020. The other winners also shared the excitement as their names were read out. Dominique Aman of Modern Senior High School won the award for middle level (class 9-10) and Govindaraj of Vidya Mandir Middle School received trophy for lower level (class 6-8). The runners-up were Asha of Maharishi Vidya Mandir at the senior level (class 11-12) and Pavithra of CSI Bain Matriculation School (middle level) and Varsha of Holy Angels Higher Secondary School (lower level). They received trophies from N. Murali, managing director of The Hindu and Romit Chaterji, senior vice-president, Corporate Affairs, Tata Services. Appreciating the efforts of the Tata Group, Mr. Murali said that the group motivated the students to imbibe values of nation-building. He also advised the students to concentrate simultaneously on career and also contribute to nation-building. Prabath Varma, general manager of Taj Coromandel, also participated. About 240 school level winners were also presented with prizes. The competition, which was held at 40 Chennai schools at different levels, was launched in February across six cities including Mumbai and Delhi. The city level winners would compete for the National Essay competition to be held soon. The national winning school would be felicitated with a rolling trophy.
