Fire destroys plastic godown

There is no casualty: Fire Service officials

CHENNAI: A fire broke out in the godown of a private plastic company on Suryanarayana Chetty Street in Royapuram police station limits on Thursday. Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and put out the fire.

According to officials, there was no casualty. Raw materials used for producing plastic goods were destroyed. Further investigation is on.

Carpenter killed

A carpenter from Uttar Pradesh, residing in a house in Velachery was allegedly killed on Thursday.

The police said four youths — Jayaprakash, Sanjay, Panjathi and Nambul — , who were residing in the house, were all working as carpenters in the city. A wordy altercation between the four was said to have snowballed into exchanging blows. In the melee, Jayaprakash and Sanjay were seriously injured. On information from neighbours, the police arrived at the spot. Jayaprakash succumbed to his injuries, while Sanjay was admitted to the Government Royapettah Hospital, the police said.

A hunt is on for the other two persons. A case of murder has been registered. Further investigation is on.

Fatal assault

In Kumaran Nagar, Lingam (40), a tenant, died when he was allegedly assaulted by his landlord. The police said that there was a dispute between the two. A wordy duel led to exchanging of blows, causing the death of Lingam. The Ashok Nagar police are investigating.

PDS rice seized

In a surprise raid conducted by the Civil Supplies CID, 15 bags of PDS rice were seized from a woman who was about to leave for Sullurpet, Andhra Pradesh, on Thursday. After the Government's directive to check rice smuggling, the police have been closely monitoring the movements of such offenders. According to a release, Mallika (45) of Ennore attempted to smuggle the rice. After registering a case, the woman was remanded to custody.
