New Cantonment Board to take oath amid controversy

Staff Reporter

Defeated candidates move court against Pratap

  • Gazette notification gives green signal to all seven members
  • Claims of ballot papers of Pratap's opponents being found in dustbin
  • Three-member varied board will become invalid after oath

HYDERABAD: The newly elected Board of the Secunderabad Cantonment is likely to be given oath of office on Monday, after which the seven members will assume charge.

A Gazette notification giving the green signal for this to all the seven elected members reached the Cantonment office here from Delhi on Thursday.

However, more than two weeks after the results were declared, controversy still shrouds the Cantonment Board polls that were held on August 6.

A group of candidates who lost the elections have moved court contesting the victory of Jampanna Pratap from Ward One. They are claiming to have found ballot papers of his opponents in a dustbin.

Cantonment executive officer T. Arockianathan said he was yet to get any communiqué from the court on the issue.

Pratap also brushed aside the issue, saying that it was just mischief being done by those who could not digest their defeat.

    Special meeting

Meanwhile, with the Gazette notification arriving, SCB officials are expected to meet the Andhra Sub-Area Commander, who is also the Board president, on Friday to decide on the special board meeting during which the oath will be administered and more importantly, a decision will be made on the board's Vice President from among the seven elected members.

With the new board coming into being, the three-member varied board that was overseeing the board affairs from March 2004 will become invalid. The varied board was functioning after the last board, elected in 1997 and given an extra year from 2002 to 2003, had completed its term.
