Lawyer beaten up

NEW DELHI: A woman lawyer was allegedly beaten up and forced to drink some liquid by her brother-in-law and his friend in her chamber inside the Delhi High Court premises on Thursday morning.

According to the police, the incident took place around 8 a.m. when Hitaishi Arora was in chamber of a senior lawyer under whom she practises. It is alleged that her brother-in-law Naresh Arora, a resident of neighbouring Faridabad, and his friend Rakesh entered the chamber and overpowered her.

They allegedly beat her up, tied her hands and legs and then made her drink some liquid. They also allegedly tried to strangle her. Before anyone could come to her aid, they fled from the scene.

Ms. Arora was later taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where she has been kept under observation.

The police have registered a case on the basis of the complaint lodged by Ms. Arora and launched a hunt for the accused. Enquiries revealed that Ms. Arora's sister has also lodged a complaint against Naresh with the Faridabad police.

NEW DELHI: Kicking off the race for elections to the Delhi University Students' Union, Amrita Dhawan of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) filed her nomination papers for the post of president on Thursday. The University also got a tiny glimpse of the flavour of the coming days with a spate of rallies being organised by various student outfits.

Having been the vice-president of DUSU last year, Amrita is now looking to clinch the big post of president. She filed her nomination on Thursday amid the sound of the `dhol' and her supporters cheering her on.

Determined not to let the issue of busts placed at DUSU office be forgotten, ABVP activists had gone on a hunger strike on Wednesday night. However, they withdrew their strike on Thursday following an appeal by Proctor Gurmeet Singh.

Juveniles arrested

NEW DELHI: Four juveniles were arrested by the Vikaspuri police of West Delhi on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in auto-lifting.

On Tuesday, a police team was on routine patrol when it spotted a Maruti Esteem car without a registration number plate. The police intercepted the vehicle and asked the occupants to produce the vehicle's papers, but they could not. Enquiries revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from Delhi Cantonment. Subsequently, all the four juveniles were detained.

During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to their involvement in vehicle thefts. At their instance, the police have recovered three Maruti 800 and a Maruti Zen.

Student commits suicide

NEW DELHI: Unable to bear the examination pressure, a Class IX student allegedly hanged himself to death at his Narela residence in North-West Delhi on Wednesday.

Vikram Dagar was a student of Bharat Mata Public School. His parents said Vikram appeared worried on Wednesday night as he was not able to solve some problems. Later, Vikram went to the first floor and allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling. The local police have initiated inquest proceedings in the matter.
