Staff Correspondent

Nearly 200 librarians are participating in a two-day workshop

  • "Never treat libraries as mere storehouses of books"
  • "Modernisation of libraries with digital technology inevitable"

Belgaum: The two-day workshop on "Quality indicators and best practices for the academic libraries", which was inaugurated here on Friday, took off on a positive note with speakers exchanging views on ways and means to enhance quality of library services in the academic institutions.

Organised by Karnataka Law Society's Gogte College of Commerce, the event has been co-sponsored and partly funded by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. Society chairman S.M. Kulkarni inaugurated the workshop. Nearly 200 librarians or delegates from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa are attending the workshop. Highlighting about the NAAC initiatives to improve the condition of libraries, NAAC Librarian Srinivas Raghavan described library as the "heart" of an academic institution. With the present generation of students becoming curious, the academic institutions could not escape from their responsibility of providing better library facilities. With the world experiencing revolutionary changes in the field of information technology and communication, it was inevitable for the institutions to introduce the latest digital technologies to modernise their libraries to facilitate students better and give quick access to information on various subjects and topics.

    Awareness

Stressing on the greater need to create awareness about the significance of libraries in improving the quality of education among all stakeholders, he said NAAC had been striving to find ways to enhance the quality of library services by organising workshops and through sharing ideas with international agencies.
