PACBs reluctant to give crop loans: farmers

Staff Reporter

Give me a list of such banks, says Collector

ERODE: The Agriculture Grievances Day meeting on Friday witnessed a heated discussion between farmers and officials regarding granting of crop loan from the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks (PACBs).

At the meeting presided by Collector D. Karthikeyan, farmers' representatives K.A. Senniappan, Natesan, Muthuswamy and E.R. Kumarasamy complained that many PACBs were reluctant to grant fresh loans to them though the Government had waived cooperative crop loans and ordered the PACBs to grant loans.

The Collector told the farmers to give him a list of PACBs, which delayed the grant of new loans, and the details of banks that refused to return the jewels pledged by farmers for obtaining Agricultural Jewel Loan.

Charges denied

Joint Registrar of Cooperatives K.M. Jamsheed Basha said 99.7 per cent of jewels pledged by the farmers were returned.

He also said from the PACBs a sum of Rs. 2.71 crore had been granted as crop loan this year and also a sum of Rs. 14.06 crore advanced as Agricultural Crop Loan to the farmers. He denied the charges of the farmers that loans were not disbursed.

As the farmers were not satisfied with the reply, the Collector wanted the Joint Registrar to prepare a list of new borrowers and display the list in all the PACBs. He also wanted the farmers to apprise the Joint Registrar about the PACB officials those who refused to grant loan.

Secretary of the Sakthi Sugars Sugarcane Growers Association Senniappan said 24 PACBs were in the red in the district and the depositors were not able to get back their deposits even after the maturity period. Mr. Basha said they were expecting funds from the Government and NABARD and once they got it, deposits to the tune of Rs. 8 crore would be repaid with interest.
