Appalling behaviour

The scene in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, of RJD and JD (U) MPs nearly coming to blows over Prabhunath Singh's remark on Lalu Prasad, was appalling. The behaviour of the MPs came as no surprise though. The people's representatives who often use un-parliamentary language in the House have now gone a step forward — attempting physical assault. If immediate measures are not taken to introduce a strict code of conduct for MPs and punish those violating it, proceedings will end up becoming more acrimonious in future.

V.P. Damodar,
Pune

The behaviour of JD (U) and RJD MPs was anything but parliamentary. It is time to either fix minimum qualifications for their entry into Parliament or stop the live telecast of the proceedings.

Shivakant Kumar,
New Delhi

Heated arguments among MPs, with fingers pointed at one another, appear to be the hallmark of parliamentary functioning. Who in this country is responsible for ushering in a better tomorrow, one wonders.

K.P.U. Menon,
Palakkad, Kerala

Scenes of an MP rushing menacingly towards a fellow MP over an argument on a case of molestation were indeed shameful. The incidents mark yet another low in the annals of Parliament. What a waste of taxpayers' money!

M.K. Vipin Kumar Nambiar,
Bangalore

The Speaker cannot enforce discipline in Parliament like an army commander. The members should help him maintain the decorum of the House, by keeping acrimonious behaviour within manageable limits.

J. Kumaran,
Chennai

The Constitution should be amended to enable voters to recall members who perpetrate disorderly scenes.

V.K. Sathyavan Nair,
Kottayam, Kerala

The people should be happy that the "performance level" of our MPs has improved with the increase in their salaries and allowances. None should have any doubt about the health of our democracy.

A.P. Govindankutty,
Cheruthuruthy, Kerala
