BIJAPUR: A 24-year-old woman, who fell into a borewell, was rescued after 14 hours at Sikkeri village near Bagalkot on Friday. Kallavva Shrishaila Gaddigennavar, who had gone to the field with her husband around 9.30 p.m. on Thursday, accidentally fell into an abandoned borewell by the wayside. She slipped nearly 20 feet deep into the well. The villagers struggled for six hours to rescue her but in vain. They informed the police in the morning. Superintendent of Police Ramesh Harihar was about to leave his house to accompany the Central team touring Bagalkot on Friday but changed his programme and rushed to the spot with an earthmover. After five hours, a parallel pit was dug, from which a horizontal passage to the borewell was drilled. By 11.30 a.m., Kallavva was rescued with minor injuries. She has been admitted to the Bagalkot civil hospital. Mr. Harihar lauded the drivers of the earthmover Motilal Jadav and R.B. Chauan, and others who carefully dug the parallel pit without causing any harm to the victim, and gave them a cash award.
