Villagers pour out grievances

Team touched by hospitality of ruralfolk

BIJAPUR: Two Central teams visited flood-ravaged villages along the Krishna, Ghataprabha and the Bhima in Bagalkot and Bijapur districts on Friday, and said a comprehensive report would be submitted in a week.

The team consisting of Vatsala Kutty, Director, Ministry of Rural Development; S. Haldar and R.P. Yadav, senior officers from the departments of Water Resources and Finance respectively; deployed to assess the damage owing to flood in Bagalkot district, began its tour from Aski village in Jamkhandi taluk.

Deputy Commissioner G.N. Nayak and Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat Ramanna Naik and senior officers from the district administration accompanied the team that was apparently moved by the woes of villagers. Mr. Nayak informed the team that 142 villages had been affected along the Krishna, its tributaries the Ghataprabha and the Malaprabha, and the total loss as per the assessment of district administration was Rs. 92 crore. Everywhere, the affected people narrated their woes. The team members appeared to have been moved by the devastation as the affected people showed their damaged houses and agriculture fields that were destroyed.

The team members were touched by the hospitality shown by the people at the Tamadoddi rehabilitation centre. Women welcomed them with "kalasha" and "aarathi" and garlanded them. Later talking to presspersons Ms. Kutty said their report would surely reflect the real picture of devastation caused by the flood. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin and Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat Rajeev Ranjan, accompanied the team members.
