Bangalore: When young Karishma Brinda Desai has her Bharatnatyam "ranga pravesh" next month in Raleigh, U.S., Bangalore will have something to feel proud about. Her mother, Supriya, grew up here and her grandparents live in this city. The dance academy run by Ms. Supriya will be presenting performances by her students this year with Karnataka as theme to mark the golden jubilee of the formation of the State. A student of the Southeast Raleigh High School, Los Angeles-born Karishma began learning dance early from her mother and accompanied her mother on a world dance tour as a child. She had her first stage appearance at six in a presentation of Jai Shiva Shankar. She has also appeared on brief dance shows on local television channels, her parents say. Karishma has a flair for "abhinaya" which she has displayed in theatre too. She has had singing parts in school productions and features in the local chorus as a soprano. On the academic side, during the 2002 American Kannada Kootas Conference in Detroit, she received the first prize for the "story completion" contest. She volunteers her time for activities such as "Walk for diabetes," the walkathon fundraiser for CRY, and for blood donation drives in Raleigh. With interest in medical and biotechnology subjects, she is involved with the local Medical Club and passed nutrition knowledge test of the North Carolina Health Occupation Students of America competition. She is now an active member of the biotechnology liaison of the Medical Club.
