Racist profiling, says CPI (M)

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday took exception to the detention of 12 Indian air passengers in Amsterdam and demanded that the Government convey to Dutch authorities its strong protest against the treatment meted out to them.

Describing it as a "glaring example of racist profiling," the Polit Bureau, in a statement here, said there was no evidence whatsoever to suspect the Indian businessmen of any terrorist activity and yet they were handcuffed and kept in detention for two days. Northwest Airlines, responsible for this incident, must be asked to pay heavy compensation to the affected passengers, failing which the American carrier should be restricted from flying to India.

India should also convey to all Western governments that harassment of Indians aboard flights and at airports would not be acceptable, the statement said.
