Congress sending feelers, says TRS chief

Special Correspondent

To withhold letter to President withdrawing support to UPA

NEW DELHI : Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao said he was withholding his letter, withdrawing support to the United Progressive Alliance to the President, since the Congress was "sending" some proposals.

"In principle, we cannot continue in UPA once we have resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. The Congress is sending feelers and there are some proposals. We shall wait, and once I return from Hyderabad I shall send the letter to the President conveying withdrawal from the UPA," he told a press conference on Friday. He, however, did not elaborate the nature of proposals.

Mr. Rao charged that the Congress "betrayed and cheated" the people of Telangana but appealed to all sections "not to play into the hands of the enemies," by indulging in violence.

Mr. Rao said he called off his fast in deference to the appeal made by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. As for the conduct of his party legislators in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, Mr. Rao said they were exercising their democratic right by asking that the Government to bring a resolution on a separate Telangana. This, he said would expose all those opposed to Telangana. He accused the State Congress of running away from it and adjourning the Assembly.

Former Union Minister and TRS leader A. Narendra made a statement in the Lok Sabha explaining the reasons for his resignation from the Union Cabinet. He said "this unfortunate decision reflects the frustration and agony of people of Telangana who once again feel let down and betrayed vis-à-vis the formation of a Telengana State."
