Inter-collegiate hockey from today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The fourth Dhyan Chand memorial inter-collegiate hockey tournament will be held at the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Kariyavattom, from Saturday.

Giving details of the three-day event to the media on Friday, LNCPE Principal, S.S. Hasrani, said the tournament was being organised as part of the National Sports Day falling on August 29.

Eleven teams including last year's winner Department of Physical Education, Annamalai University, and runner-up YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai, have confirmed their participation.

The event will be held on a knock-out basis and the semifinals will be played on August 28 and the final on August 29.

Besides the top teams of last year, other teams that will take part in the tournament are Jamal Mohammed College (Trichy), SN College (Kollam), University College (Thiruvananthapuram), St. Albert's College (Ernakulam), Fatima Matha National College (Kollam), St. John's College (Palayamkottai) and UC College (Aluva), besides host LNCPE.

Thiruvananthapuram dominates

Host Thiruvananthapuram dominated the show on the opening day of the State women's games (Group IV), which began here on Friday.

Thiruvananthapuram edged out Malappuram 11-10 to win the kho-kho title at the Central Stadium. Thrissur earned a 10-9 win over Palakkad to take the third spot.

Thiruvananthapuram will meet Palakkad in the kabaddi final. In the semifinals, it defeated Kannur 67-41, while Palakkad overcame Ernakulam 46-16.

Thiruvananthapuram entered the volleyball final as well with straight sets victory over Wayanad. In the final, it will meet the winner of the Kottyam-Ernakulam tie.

In swimming, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur shared the honours on the first day.

Swimming (winners only): 100m freestyle: M. Manusha (Tsr, 1:07.62 seconds); 200m freestyle: Josna P. Joy (Tsr, 2:26.84 secs); 400m freestyle: Saranya S. Nair (Tvm, 5:24.20 secs); 100m backstroke: A.J. Keerthy (Tvm, 1:22.99 secs); 200m backstroke: S.K. Beena (Tsr, 2:54.65 secs); 100m breaststroke: M. Mini (Tsr, 1:28.71 secs); 200m breaststroke: B.R. Neenu (Tvm, 3:21.21 secs); 200m IM: C. Archa (Tvm, 2:57.63 secs); 100m butterfly: B. Praveena (Tvm, 1:13.83 secs); 4x100m medley: Thrissur (5:28.70 secs); 4x100m freestyle: Thiruvananthapuram (5:01.06 secs).
