Soumya makes a big splash

PALA: Alphonsa College's Soumya Joseph made a big splash winning seven gold medals on the opening day of the 23rd Mahatma Gandhi University swimming championship at the St. Thomas College pool here on Friday.

Her haul came in the 200 metres freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and in the 400m freestyle and individual medley. She was also in Alphonsa's triumphant relay teams in the 400m medley and 4x200m freestyle.

However, the day's lone record was set by St. Thomas College's K.R. Rajesh in the men's 200m freestyle, where he clocked 4:48.9 seconds. St Thomas' men (57 points) and Alphonsa women (61) led the points table at the end of the first day of the two-day meet.

Fr. Mathew John Kokkad, Principal, St. Thomas College, inaugurated the championship and Jose James, MGU's Director of Physical Education, presided over the opening ceremony. — Principal Correspondent
