Gangjee slips to joint fifth position

Bandar Seri Begawan: Rahil Gangjee shot a steady even par 71 to stay in touch with the leaders at the midway stage of the $300,000 Brunei Open golf on the Asian Tour on Friday.

Gangjee, with his overnight seven-under, is now tied fifth and two behind co-leaders Michael Wright (66) and Lin wen Tang (63).

Four other Indians — Arjun Singh and Harmeet Kahlon (tied 29th), Jyoti Randhawa (tied 43rd) and S.S.P. Chowrasia (tied 56th) — also made the cut, which came at one-under 141.

One of the big Indian comebacks of the day were that of Jyoti Randhawa, who shot six birdies and one bogey over last eight holes and clawed himself back from five-over to two-under.

The Indians missing the cut were Digvijay Singh (142), Amandeep Johl (143), Gurbaaz Mann (146), Amritinder Singh (149), Kanwar Sekhon (155) and Uttam Singh Mundy, who retired.

At Reno (U.S.A.), an eagle on the last hole saved the day for Arjun Atwal as he carded a one-over 71 to be tied 46th along with Daniel Chopra, but things went horribly wrong for Jeev Milkha Singh, who ended up at the 129th position with a seven-over 79 in the opening round of the $3 million Reno-Tahoe Open.

At the top of the leaderboard, American Will MacKenzie took the sole lead with a nine-under 63 studded with three eagles and six birdies.

Kapur joint 42nd

At Akron (U.S.A.), a late recovery failed to help Shiv Kapur's cause as he carded a poor two-over 72 to be tied for the 42nd spot in the WGC Bridgestone invitational on Thursday.

Australia's Adam Scott seized the first round lead. Scott, 26, nabbed nine birdies in his last 12 holes en route to a seven-under 63. — Agencies
